The Acme Bats

Every time I drive by the Greensboro Arboretum off Wendover Ave. and see the lights shining on the ball fields I wish I was out there playing. I wonder if I could hit a homer off the perfect pitch. I picture myself making a Jeter-esque leaping throw to complete the put-out.

I've tried to instill the same dreams in my friends, starting with humor. I built us up to them as underdogs, belonging to a sandlot, only squaring off against other teams when we showed up on their fields and challenged them, resorting to " You play ball like a girl," if and when necessary. Little leagues, churches, we'd be equal-opportunity ball players.

Tonight I actually looked up what leagues in town are available to folks like us, people with little athletic ability or years away from the game. We got us a name. We got us a logo. Now we just need something like 12 other players.

This fall, play ball!
